As a nosy person there’s a certain mystique when it comes to other people’s jobs.
In convos where the question of someone’s work comes up I find myself asking “So what do you do day to day?” I like to dig down past the job titles I don’t understand and get to grips with the true nitty gritty of it. Okay you’re a big data analyst, but what happens after you turn on your computer in the morning? What spreadsheets do you use! And how did you know how to do that in the first place!?
I know I’m not alone in these feelings (not only because I’m one of thousands of people who religiously watch a woman on Tik Tok who makes videos of doing her payroll job which is soo interesting to me!!) because we’ve had quite a few questions about our day job too. A couple of our lovely paid Subscribers asked us to share a day in the life where we share what we get up to, so that’s what I’ve written here.
Although we write this Substack our main day job is running an award-winning makers market in London called Salad Days. We host monthly markets all over the city where you’ll find the UK’s most incredibly talented makers all with a focus on traditional craft. Things like handmade ceramics, art, jewellery - special treasures you won’t find on the highstreet. We hosted our first event in December 2019 and it’s been Liv’s full time job ever since, I came on full time about a year later in late 2020.
We both run the business full time together, it’s our main source of income that pays our mortgages and it’s still just the two of us so we do every element of the job. Some parts of of it are hard (as will become obvious below 🥲) but it’s without doubt the best thing we’ve ever done.
Below you’ll find a timestamped and honest look at exactly what we do, hour to hour, when we host a market. I hope it’s interesting and not extremely boring!
